What a year, 2009. It's time to make more of a commitment to being more regular with my posts.

I've seen bad years in recruiting but this beats all. Did I check out? Or is the economy that bad? From what I hear the economy is just that bad. The good recruiters keep making things happen though. What I have seen over the last decade is after 911 happened, people took very seriously their family lives and decided not to chase after the jobs that were available. If they had roots where they were, they wanted to stay put and not relocate.

Now with this economy, I believe people understand that to survive they must move. There are open positions available, but they might not be in the location of your dreams. You may need to make a sacrifice and move to a smaller community or city where you are really needed and there aren't thousands of other people like yourself looking for a job.

Reseting priorities and having a good look at your career and where you want to take it is essential in starting this New Year to make it a successful one. Staying focused is important and never sacrifice your brand, just maybe make changes to your criteria.

Recruiting going south!

Wow, it has been awhile since my last post. My how time flies. I call and call, but agencies are not "allowed" to utilize the service Recruiters provide. Since this economy went south, I have had one company cut my fee in half after the job was done and another that just refused to pay the fee. So how is that for integrity?

Enough griping, I have a solution! I can help people find new positions and give them the tricks of my trade for a small fee. Once recruiting picks up again, I can then recruit! So why am I not afraid of competition or sharing my skills with others? Because, if times were good people would still rather have a recruiter like myself represent them than to do it on their own, especially if they are still working full time.

Let me tell you a little about my new service called Career Coaching, Growing a Brand called You! I can help you write a compelling resume and cover letter, work with you on a 20-second intro about yourself, and find 3-5 contacts to send your resume. Not to Human Resources, but to hiring managers. People need to understand their value to an organization and present themselves in a way that the hiring manager wants to make room for them to solve their ongoing personnel problems. If you have the kahunas to make these calls to the hiring manager, I can help you with a script to get it done! Contact me if you want to learn more about the nominal fee. Just remember, it will be up to you to get that job, not me, but I will equip you the best way possible.

Another day of recruiting in a down economy....

I truly enjoy recruiting, helping people find positions they only thought were in their dreams. But in this economy it is ever so challenging. Companies often prefer not to use a recruiter when so many are on the streets. What I try to do is position myself with companies to know that I have no problem taking on the more difficult searches for them. You know the position, the person has to have a certain background and skill set, and require the right salary and will live in their area. Piece of cake right? No. Since 9/11 people are cautious about moving their families. Priorities are different. Rightfully so, but I need to make money too! Be a little flexible! Anyway, I still enjoy talking to new people and helping them realize their dreams!

@dg

Ok, it's been way too long since I posted anything, so I am back. I am receiving more and more calls and emails regarding layoffs. Why is this happening all of a sudden? Yes, I hear the media. Is it all because of banks? Or the lack of integrity in the banking industry? Unemployment is rising. Often people think if people are unemployed that is good for our business. Not so, 85% of the people we represent are happily employed people. People not looking for a new job, but if the right position should come to them, they might just take a look. You see we aren't a quick fix for employment. If companies are laying off that means there aren't as many positions. We might work with someone 2-4 weeks before we place them or it could take up to 3-4 years before the perfect job comes along for for them. So please, if you are unemployed, understand that recruiters won't be able to fix your problem necessarily. What we can do is help you market yourself giving you tips and tools how to do so. We want to help all people that comes to us, but it just isn't possible.

Recruiting

Blogging is new to me, but I have to tell you recruiting isn't. I feel so fortunate that my specialty is in advertising recruiting. I am in some groups and websites with other recruiters and they are feeling real pain due to our economy. Where are the jobs? Fortunately, I have plenty to work on and people are getting hired. January has been a great month! One thing I have noticed with my peers, is they are spending too much time reading and listening to bad news. They need to find the places that are still growing and profiting. There may be a lot of jobs lost, but how many of those jobs are blue collar that we don't even touch in recruiting? I wish I could just scream, "don't listen to the news!". Make it happen, think outside your box, get back to basics and start marketing an exceptional candidate that you just interviewed!

Another Recruiting day

It is so much fun when I get in touch with someone and we have a live talk! Voicemail is so frustrating and I am impatient. All day long I had to leave one message after another. Generally they call back, but it is very draining for me, when I don't have someone to talk to. My energy goes down, down, down. But when that time comes and they call me back, boy do I get excited. I love people. They are interesting, friendly and helpful. If they aren't the right person, more often than not, they know someone who would be a better fit and the hunt goes on. Right now we are searching for some people in Dallas. That is a town I love to recruit for, maybe because I enjoy the energy, the warmth, the cosmopolitan lifestyle in the south. Well it has been another exciting day in the life of an Advertising Recruiter!

Control Freak? I get to talk to some of the most creative people in Advertising. They' re interesting, funny, passionate and so innovative with how they think. In the recruiting business, my job is to find the top talent. And for your information, the Top Talent doesn't generally come looking for me. They are very busy with their careers and moving up that corporate ladder. My client companies who pay my fee, the "Agency", are sometimes looking for 2-5 year people and they are the hardest to find. They don't seem to be saavvy on Linkedin and they are hidden within the agency. It seems like the buzz across the country is retail environments, consumer insights, digital, new media. New ways to hook that consumer! Where the internet is great to shop on, I love shopping on-line, a lot of people seem to have a need to touch and feel the product, so there is this battle between retail environments and online advertising or maybe not a battle but how they try to work together. Most Agencies won't hand out that simple placement or position, they only give me the one that challenges them and I have found....I embrace that challenge and enjoy looking for that very special person with that very special skill set. I find the best people brand themselves and the best agencies have a brand they call their own.
